CAFE DUPRI=EL FIN?

ANOTHER HIP HOP BUSINESS FALLS DOWN THE DRAIN.IS IT ME OR THE FAILURE HIP HOP MOGUL'S BUSINESS ENTERPRISES SEEM TO BE DOOMED TO FAIL FROM THE GET GO.

THE LATEST BUSINESS ENDAVEOR FOR JERMAINE DUPRI HAS FAILED. FIRST HIS FORAY INTO VODKA BUSINESS NOW THIS CAFE DUPRI. READ THE FOLLOWING REPORT FROM SOHH HOMIE GYANT ABOUT IT.

Jermaine Dupri is in the news today and this time it’s got nothing to do with his lavish parties or superstar girlfriend. This time it’s got to do with shocking allegations from JD’s former restaurant staff employees. Find out what’s really hood below.

Jermaine Dupri’s highly touted Buckhead eatery is dead center in a recession controversy. According to WSB-TV the music mogul’s bistro, Café Dupri has closed it doors. But there’s just one problem…nobody told the employees. [Watch Video Here]

Café Dupri has closed it doors indefinitely. After months of problems it seems that the best decision was to just end the business venture. However, allegations of worker abuse is receiving most of the media coverage.

Several workers are complaining that they’ve gone as far as several weeks without collecting a paycheck. And to add insult to injury some are even claiming that they were suddenly forced to sign confidentiality agreements barring them from discussing anything about the restaurant to anyone.

I've heard about the shady business practices over at Café Dupri for the past 3 months. I’ve gotten numerous emails from employees who were putting JD’s mom Tina on blast complaining about abusive working conditions and unpaid salaries.

I figured they were just some hatin’ ass ex-employees who were bitter and decided to pay it no mind. But after watching the video it would appear that somethings going on. How do you explain closing down a company and not telling the employees? How do you explain several bounced employee checks? But most importantly how do you force employees to sign a confidentiality agreement when you're about to go out of business?

Tina insists that all the employees were paid. And if that’s true then there shouldn’t be one employee that has a returned NSF check from Café Dupri, right?

The Recession In depth Preview Young Jeezy

Less Than 3 weeks until the Recession(Def Jam Marketing, its so elementary at times) but the fellow by the name of Jay Jenkins returns to expand on how rough it is for the hood and america and that we need a change(didnt we just have that with Nassir Jones latest album oh well). Part dope boy and part social activtist (9th grade dropout go figure), Jeezy's latest attempts to return to the core of the reason we all start listening to him. After his last LP, people wondered what happen to the vintage Jeezy, had he turned into an industry nigga and forgot about the trap. Or was just the dreaded sophomore slump( 1.9 million sold to 1.2 million records not a bad slump at all) and label politics. With the state of the industry and his own imprint CTE(USDA underachieved and Bloodraw solid debut album was mishandled) can Jeezy come to save the day. All early indications says yes but coming off a high of Put on and the remix to come back with crazy world as a 2nd single might be another slight mis step. Only time will tell, but the good folks over at Complex magazine got a preview of the album and the following to report......

"THE RECESSION (INTRO)”

Producer: DJ Toomp
Quote: “It’s a recession everybody broke/So I came back to give everybody hope.”
Sounds Like: “I Got Money” with eerier synths from T.I.’s “What You Know”.
Synopsis: Hearing Toomp on the first track of the album instead of 4 or 5 tracks in is like skipping the foreplay and going straight to the fuckin’. And as real as a recession is, you can’t help but smirk at how the newscaster sampled in the intro considers the R-word taboo.

“CRAZY WORLD”

Producer: Midnight Black
Quote: “If this world keep spinnin’/Yeah my rims still spinnin’/Even though the money slow we still spendin’.”
Sounds Like: Jeezy throws a jab at Bush while riding a wave of horns that’s similar to Blood Raw’s “Louie Bag”.
Synopsis: People still ride on spinners? Now that’s crazy.

“AMAZING”

Producer: Drumma Boy
Quote: “Bitch I’m amazing/Look what I’m blazing/Eyes so low that I look like an Asian.”
Sounds Like: “Put On,” minus Kanye.
Synopsis: We already know Drumma Boy cranks out grand slams for Jeezy, Rocko, and Tip, but it takes Jeezy’s unabashed honesty on this one to take you out of the occasional monotony of Drumma’s style.

“LET THE DOLLAR CIRCULATE”

Producer: Don Cannon
Quote: “I’ma start off slow, yeah so so/They love me out in D.C., just like Go-Go.”
Sounds Like: A soulful version of “Mr. 17.5’” with a Go-Go twist.
Synopsis: You wonder why no one sampled this forgotten Billy Paul gem by the same name before, seeing as making it rain has been the thing to rap about. Thank the man that gave us “Me And Mrs. Jones” for Canon’s inspiration.

“WORD PLAY”

Producer: Justice League
Quote: “I’m way too intelligent for you to play with my intelligence.”
Sounds Like: The thick drums of JL’s signature percussion heard on 2 Pistols’ “Gettin Money Mane”.
Synopsis: This is supposed to be Jeezy’s fuck you to non-believers about his lyricism. This line is as dumbed down as he gets.

“VACATION”

Producer: DJ Nasty
Quote: “I’m outta here, you a postcard.”
Sounds Like: “White Girl” with a tan.
Synopsis: The hook is catchy as hell, but we’re not confident this one will stand out from the many other 808 thumpers that dominate the album.

“MY PRESIDENT”

Producer: Da Bizness Productions
Quote: “Because I’m soul survivor that don’t make me a convict/‘Be all you can be,’ that sounds like some dumb shit.”
Sounds Like: “My Hood” for the vote or die crowd.
Synopsis: Forget Jesse Jackson and his rainbow coalition jibber-jabber, Jeezy gets colorful with his metaphors to describe rims to Jordans to the first prez with some pigment. Def Jam also stated that Nas will be appearing on the final version.

“WHO DAT”

Producer: Shawty Redd
Quote: “Fly to the club in a helicopter—I’m not talking the one with the propellors”
Sounds Like: Shawty Redd took “Black Dreams” (from The Prime Minister mixtape) and made it a nightmare.
Synopsis: If your ears don’t bleed listening to the orgy of instruments on the track, then you’ll have a seizure.

“HUSTLER’S AMBITION”

Producer: Drumma Boy
Quote: “Grandma at church while I’m in the refrigerator/In search of the baking soda, right next to the mashed potatoes.”
Sounds Like: “Hypnotize” with beefed up drums.
Synopsis: For trappers, having a song named “Hustler’s Ambitition” is like hopsters rapping about the ‘80s. Had to do it.

“WHAT THEY WANT”

Producer: Midnight Black
Quote: “I’m playing baseball the same size as golf balls.”
Sounds Like: The drip-drop keys from “Trap Or Die”.
Synopsis: Throughout the metaphor-heavy song, Jizzle compares making a million dollars to playing various ball related sports. And he doesn’t say “no homo” once!

“TAKE IT THERE” f/ Trey Songz

Producer: Fat Boy
Quote: “I’m the one she call when she want that ‘hood shit.”
Sounds Like: The happy medium between Mariah’s “Side Effects” and Usher’s “Love In This Club”.
Synopsis: The first real song catered to the ladies comes off strong like Young’s previous r&b efforts.

P.L.-NEXT TO BLOW ANN ARBOR, MI

Rappers from 106 and park Freestyle Friday have often had a jinx or curse when it came to the transition to major label success. Posta Boy to Jin to SUN.ny, each one of these alumni of 106 and park have often underwhelmed or were shevled altogether when it came to their major label album releases.

Enter the boy, PL from Ann Arbor, MI. 5 weeks winner on Freestyle Friday. Including a memorable win in which Big Tigger proclaimed P.L. had the best freestyle friday ever. He is rare though, he is likely the one to break the stigma of 106 and park alumni. He has dropped 3 well recieved mix cds of his Without Warning series.

His latest offering features production from J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League(Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, etc), Bei Major(Plies and Trey Songz), new super producer team(my lil brothers) The Olympicks. He displays his witty punchlines and the swag of a seasoned vet throughout the CD. One track that stands out is the Olympicks assisted "Fresher Den You", which after the mixtape dropped was deemed the first single for P.L.'s album which should be picked up by a major within the next 3 months.

Its only a matter of time before the majors come knocking down his door for his John Hancock on a contract. I feel is the next nigga to blow...why cause he's fresher den you.

THE EDITORIAL: BEING SIGNED TO ANOTHER RAPPERS LABEL

With the state of the current music industry, its really rough for new and even established artists. With that being said lets examine a scenairo.

Lets start with your up and coming rapper out of Florida who has blazed the streets all over Florida. Your grit and determination has won you many fans regionally. Everything you do with 110% the effort. But you lack the manpower and the resources to move to a nationwide scale.

Steps in ATL rapper who has the biggest street buzz since 50's pre album mixtape run. Who is given a label deal 2 months after an impressive 175,000 first week number for a new artist.

Ink dry..deal done. You appear on the 2nd album of the head honcho. You the head honcho and his original protege team up to form a super group. The Album is recorded in less than 2 months. The marketing campaign for the album is viewed as controversial. The video is basically shunned from all the major music channels. The major label does minimal promotion and titles the project an authorized mixtape(which is cool if u are on an indie label or one of the majors many incubator labels(asylum koch etc..) but not if you are on a major label it really makes no sense). The project does suprisingly well for first week sales about 100,000 units sold. Heres the problem, the followup singles are more of cool album records than smash hits. The project is certified gold(meaning 500,000 records have been shipped keyword being shipped not actually sold) but yet the official soundscan is somewhere in the area of 365,000 records sold a very solid effort considering what was put into the project.

Now everyone gets back in the studio working on individual projects of each member. The head honcho wants his other artists to put out albums before his 3rd solo project. At the imprint various scenairos are thrown around on how to market and present the other 2 members of the super group to a nationwide audience. Rapper A throws out a record spends his own money promoting the record. Yet the imprint only half way get behind the record stalling the mommentum. Rapper A continues to grind his way to getting his record out. He gets his release date and gets his first single with head honcho. The imprint gets out slowly working the record once again. This time Rapper A does not let history repeat itsself and goes all out getting the record out slowly but surely the record gains mommentum. Yet the major has yet to really step in due to the fact the imprint isn't really just super crunk about the release. Really the major doesn't step in until 6 weeks before the album drops to come up with its marketing and promotional plan. Which in these days of the declining sales, instant death for any artist.

The video for the single is shot and finished and ready to be serviced. Yet the major label drops the ball this time by delaying it getting serviced to the major music networks primany channels instead it goes to the secondary channels and picked as jam of the week. Many industry insiders know the project is doomed from the start and many jokingly throwing around first week sales projections. Head Honcho states his projections of Rapper a's first week numbers as "He gonna do what he suppose to do." Release Date hits first week numbers come in and the verdict is 17,577, which for little to no promotion for a brand new artist to majority of the nation is a mini victory. It could have been avoided with proper planning and marketing. A Fall and winter college promo tour could have been scheduled. Better job by the imprint working the record before the major stepped in. Number 1 thing is the imprint should have been alot more excited about setting up the artist to succeed more than what was done.

The Problem is being signed to rapper run imprint under a major. The main rapper under the imprint is established, any artist under him is going to have to work 20x harder to establish himself out of the main rappers shadow. Sometimes the main rapper has to really cosign any artist under his imprint to kind of push up in the spotlight as individual. Their have very successful rapper-protege stories(50 cent-game, Jay z-Kanye West, T.I.-Young Dro) in those cases the imprint's staff gave 200% to make sure the projects were successful no matter the market state. Imprints now dont do shit for anyone else that isn't the main rapper. The answer the project failed they say"The game is fucked up." Everyone is cheap trying to get the new lambo and the new bentley coupe when in the end your overall business and your people are suffering. When projects fail no one is happy except those with the control of the money pot.

iSouljaBoy Coming Soon

From the basement to the penthouse ascension of the YouTube sensation Soulja Boy in 2007 was one of the most intruiging stories in the music biz. The kid had arugably the song of 2007 with Crank that Soulja Boy.
Fast Foward to 2008 a few millions richer and fresh off his internet beef with Hip Hop Legend Ice T. Soulja Boy Will Try to Prove he is not a 1 hit wonder with his sophmore release iSoulja Boy. This time around he will not produced a majority of his 2nd album. Electing to use what he says are "underground producers", for the bulk of this record. His first single will be hitting airwaves within the next few weeks produced by the hitmaker of the minute Polow.
